NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNERS

GIRL POWER

THREE WOMEN WIN NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Yemeni activist Tawakul Karman and Liberian activist Leymah Gbowee.

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded jointly to three women: Liberian Leymah Gbowee, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Tawakul Karman of Yemen.

Leymah Gbowee: She led women to defy feared warlords and pushed men toward peace during one of Africa’s bloodiest wars. Quote: ”It is about an army of women in white standing up when no one else would – unafraid because the worst things imaginable had already happened to us. It is about how we found the moral clarity, persistence, and bravery to raise our voices against war and restore sanity to our land.”

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf: Mrs Sirleaf, 72, is Africa’s first female elected head of state. The Nobel Committee said she had “worked to enhance the influence of women in West Africa during and after war”.Upon coming to office she pledged to fight corruption and bring “motherly sensitivity and emotion to the presidency” as a way of healing the wounds of war.

Tawakul Karman: A leading figure in Yemen’s pro-democracy movement. She founded Women Journalists Without Chains in 2005. She has been a prominent activist and advocate of human rights and freedom of expression for the last five years, and led regular protests and sit-ins calling for the release of political prisoners.

“We cannot achieve democracy and lasting peace in the world unless women achieve the same opportunities as men to influence developments at all levels of society,”

Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjorn Jagland in Oslo.

11. FUN FACT OF THE WEEK

FAINTING GOATS

A silly but fascinating ‘fun fact of the week’ this week

‘The Fainting Goat’

This special breed of goat continuously ‘faints’ throughout its life.

HOW: The goat will collapse on its side for about ten to fifteen seconds when it becomes startled due to its muscles freezing and body stiffening.

WHY: This is from a condition called myotonia congentia caused by a combination of recessive genes.
